Easter Throw Back

We've talked about our previous takes on "style" before...

This photo seems more than appropriate for "Throw Back Thursday" (#TBT) on social media so I figured I'd post it here as well. (P.S. are you following us on Facebook and Twitter?)

My mom made that bunny. She also made Uncle Sam, witches and santas. One for every season, you know.

In all seriousness, I hope you all have a wonderful Easter. Remember that the reason for the holiday is not candy and bunnies...it's the fact that we're all saved. What a blessing we've been given with every day of life.

Happy Easter!

Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day to all you moms out there!

What a blessing it is that I get to share such an amazing bond with my mom. We talk nearly every day, we really are the best of friends and now we get to share in the creation of this blog.

I thank my mom for instilling in me her sense of style amongst other things. She taught me that beauty comes from within, but a good lipstick and some mascara can't hurt. She helped me learn to be confident and humble at the same time. She let me pursue my passions, even if they weren't the same as hers when I was younger. I inherited her curly hair and her height.

I believe my mom is one of the most beautiful women I've ever met. And I'm thankful for her every day.

I wish every mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and step mom the best day. I hope you get to spend some time relaxing and doing something you love.

Love to all,
Karli

Put a Cork in it

As we're working on this joint blog, laughing and drinking wine (ok, maybe in a couple of hours) we're struck by the number of wine corks we possess between our two households. We both decorate with wine inspired decor and really love the look. So what do you do with all those corks?

Here are several ideas for using and displaying wine corks (and some other wine decor thrown in for good measure).

Vintage candy jars filled with a collection on open shelving in Kandy's house

Corks cut in half, used as magnets on the fridge

Wall of wine with framed corks in Karli's dining room

Write significant memories on special corks and display in clear vase or basket

We've seen lots of clever ways to use and display all those corks. What are you favorite ways to reuse them?

Grandpa's East Lake Dresser

As a child, I have fond memories of the time I spent with my Grandpa Ray playing in his parts and machinery shop. I spent hours ringing up "pretend" sales on the cash register, searching through boxes of nuts and bolts, and exploring the attic. The attic was accessible only by ladder, all the big stuff it contained had been brought up with an old rope pulley. Hidden in dark corners were a strange collection of antiques...an incubator for chicks, an old embalming table (creepy, right?), and an old dresser filled with an assortment of papers, letters, and photos. I was thrilled to find old love letters Grandpa had written to Grandma tied up with silk ribbon in one drawer.

After Grandpa and Grandma were gone, my parents gave me that dresser from the attic. I was thrilled to take possession of that fond memory, even if it was in rough shape.

It had decades of dust and debris on it but had never been painted, so restoring it just involved cleaning it up, tightening and regluing the joints, and a coat of tung oil. Only one original knob was in place when I got it. I searched antique stores high and low to find the old ebony ones that matched.

I did leave the drawers in the shape I found them...complete with baling wire on the back...that was Grandpa's way to fix anything!

After I had refinished the dresser and proudly brought it into the house, Karli, (being about 9 or 10 years old) asked me what I thought it was worth. I went into a long "schpeel" about its age, missing glove boxes, etc. and told her that considering all, it was probably worth about $300. I then asked her if she liked it. She informed me that she was just curious so she would know what to sell it for someday!

I think Karli has decided that she does like "old things" afterall. She has grown to have an appreciation for character pieces and especially one with family history. The East Lake dresser now resides in our entry way, but someday it will be Karli's.

The old photo sitting atop the dresser is one of Grandpa Ray as a child.
