Refreshing a Master Bedroom

Today I'm sharing a little bit of a refresh on our master bedroom.

I showed you all our master bedroom a while ago, but since then we've added a couple things.

It went from this when we moved in....

To this last spring...

To play off the yellow that I've been loving, we purchased a large yellow rug from IKEA. I love the pop of color it adds to the room! It makes you not notice the bad carpet as much...or at least that's what I tell myself. :)

The next thing I did was add two mirrors. I hung them behind each of our side tables. I love how they bounce the light around the room! They also add some weight to the otherwise large, overbearing wall.

We also added the yellow throw. We keep it on the foot board, because it's really just for looks.

Porter decided to take a snooze during the middle of this photoshoot. I can't blame him.

We also got a close-out Sleep Number Bed under those covers. We can both have our own firmness now and we're sleeping better!

There are things I still want to do to this room. First, I'd like a larger sitting chair over in the corner where the small black wood chair is (something I can look for at flea markets this summer). I'd also like to replace the baseboards with the large white ones we used on the main floor. Obviously carpet is on my list too, but that will be quite a ways down the road. And looking at these photos makes me think I need some larger pillows behind the white ones on the bed. There's always something to do!

Here's to another year of style (and better sleep too!)

Quick Change Artist: Master Bedroom Refresh

Our house has a lot of gray, black, white and green. Brent has voiced this to me on several occasions. So after giving it some thought, I realized one of the easiest rooms to update would be our master bedroom. It had green pillows and a green candle. That's really all the green. Here's a glimpse of what it looked like.
Two green pillows and a black and white damask pillow.

I've been thinking about adding more white to the bedding.

Even Porter's bed is green. (Cutest doggie ever, right?!)

The wall opposite the bed. I happen to really love this arrangement.
In an ideal world, we'd have a nice sitting chair over in that corner with a side table and a floor lamp. And you probably can't tell from the pic above but there is a painting hanging in the mix that I've always loved. I bought it from an artist outside the Guggenheim about five years ago. So it became my inspiration.
What do you see in the painting? I see a street view of a New York with a taxi on the left.
I had a glorious Friday off and I headed to TJ Maxx for some stress relief. I hit the jackpot in the clothing department (scored black shorts and two versatile tanks) and the home goods (pillows, a basket and a white ceramic garden stool I've been hunting for a year!)

I got these two pillows as a starting point. Love that they pull in the yellow from the painting.

I had the rug in the guest room and pulled it in for fun. I think I like it!

Also found a yellow candle that smells like apricots (yum!) and the basket that fits perfectly in Brent's night stand.
I think I can amp up the yellow just a little bit more, so I'll be on the search for a new throw for the bench/bottom of the bed.
I remembered that I had two shams that came with the duvet cover so I put two extra pillows in them.

I also found that cool ceramic white light that I added to the dresser.
I'm loving the results for only about $45! Thank you, TJ Maxx!

Family Room Blanket Storage

I saw this idea on Pinterest and knew I had to do it in our family room. We have quite a bit of black furniture in the room, so I started by looking for ladders that had a "used" look.

Brent and I took a stroll through downtown Littleton one afternoon and found a great antique store with several old painter's ladders. I didn't need the 12 foot length since our ceilings are only 8 feet. The owner agreed to cut it down to the size I needed.

We got it home and I gave it a little sanding on the really rough spots so it wouldn't snag the blankets. I left all the paint drips and raw wood. Then it went in the house and the blankets were hung. Viola! Easy.

Our fun blankets are easy to access and displayed prominently now. I love how the ladder draws the eye up in the room since it almost reaches the ceiling.
